Gutters are vital for directing water away from your roof and foundation. Therefore, it is frustrating when a leak occurs, especially when it’s in the gutter corners.

Why does this happen? What can you do about it? We explain the reasons behind a leaky gutter corner, how you can repair it, and why roof maintenance can solve the problem in the first place.

Why Are Calgary Gutter Corners So Problematic?

Gutter corners are the most common spots where leaks can form. The key reason is that corners consist of two affixed pieces that connect, and therefore, the seam is at a natural weak point. Many factors can enhance the leaking in this spot, including:

  • Poor quality of the gutter installation
  • Used and old gutters
  • Insufficient or inadequate sealant application
  • Ice and snow pressure
  • The expansion and contraction of the gutters

While it might not seem like a problem, a leaky gutter corner can put unnecessary pressure on your whole eavestrough system, resulting in damages to your roof and siding.

How To Repair A Leaky Gutter Corner in Calgary

If you do have a consistent gutter corner leak, it’s highly recommended that you seal it promptly before it becomes worse.

Here is how to properly fix your gutter corner:

  1. Thoroughly clean your gutters. We recommend using a garden hose to flush out all the debris that has accumulated.
  2. To identify the exact point of the leak, spray your hose down the gutter to find the spot.
  3. Remove the existing sealant or caulking from the gutters with a putty knife. Please do not add more caulking to the old as it will not provide you with the protection you expect.
  4. Clear away all the remaining debris of the caulking. Make sure your gutters are clean and clear.
  5. Take your sealant of choice (we advise using gutter seal), and apply it directly over the seams where the leak is occurring. If the hole is large, you may need to replace your gutters, and a professional recommendation is encouraged.
  6. Do the same for multiple corners if you have more than one leak.

While the above process might seem simple, many issues and risks can arise. That’s why repairing the gutter is not a DIY job. Fixing a gutter corner is best handled by a professional roofing company

How To Prevent A Leaky Gutter Corner

By undertaking routine roofing maintenance in Calgary, you can reduce the risks of gutter corner leaks occurring. Having a professional roofing contractor inspect your roof and gutters twice a year, most notably after the winter and summer months, can ensure your eavestrough system remains functional, won’t damage your home and increase curb appeal.

Leaks are often considered the worst problem a roofing system can face. They are indicative of further damage, cause damage to personal belongings, and can be a real hassle to fix or correct.

Luckily, roof repairs in Calgary are not often needed for leaky roofs. This is because roofs are a system of layers that should prevent any water from entering into the household, and with proper maintenance, the damage should never be that severe.

However, because of the multi-layered system of roofs, if there is a leak, it can be hard to identify. This is when it is important to know the steps to finding a leak in your roof. To begin with, you should:

Common Signs Roof Repair is Required

Check For Moisture Spots

Checking for leaks begins with a visual inspection of your ceiling. Check the topmost floor of your home and use a flashlight to ensure you are seeing any subtle changes between the ceiling space of each room. What you are looking for is dark lines that form a, roughly, circular shape in the material of your ceiling. This is an indication of moisture above. Along with this comes:

Check for Mold

While performing your visual inspection on your ceiling, look for any traces of mold. Be especially attentive to corners and seams as these areas create a good environment for mold to grow and multiply. If there is any sign of mold, strongly consider roof repairs in Calgary.

Use a Temperature Gun

A good indication of leaks in your roof is a change in temperature. Therefore, it is a good idea to use a temperature gun that can take measurements from afar during your indoor inspection. Point at all four corners of each room, and the centre of the room as well. You are looking for significant changes in temperature that don’t match the rest of your temperature readings.

Remember to be cognizant of sunlight and other temperature-altering items. A false reading could cause unnecessary stress or concern.

Call the Roof Repair Experts

The best thing you can do if you suspect your roof leaks is call a roofing company in Calgary. They will come in and use specialized equipment to look for signs of leaks, and if they discover anything untoward they will have the right equipment and expertise to correct the repair at the same time.

If there is no suspicion of a roof repair it is still important to seek regular roof inspection. Once or twice a year is ample to ensure your roof is working properly and protecting your home from any issues.

A popular question we get asked as the fall weather settles in is “Can I Replace my Roof in the Winter?” and we reply with a confident “Yes!”.

It’s a common misconception that roof replacements are seasonal, especially in Southern Alberta.  Many homeowners are in a rush to have their roofs replaced in the spring & fall but don’t realize that their roof can be replaced in the winter.

Winter roof replacements may take a bit longer as special care will be taken to ensure proper application and a safe work site, but the wait time for the work to begin will likely be shorter than in the warmer months.

Our warranty at Hubbard Roofing & Exteriors will remain the same no matter what month you replace your roof, which is our guarantee that we will provide the best workmanship and only work in conditions that support that.  Request a free quote today to get started.

Safety

Before any work will be completed the snow will be removed from the roof (if applicable) and the crew will ensure the roof is safe to walk on.  Safety harnesses and ropes will be worn by everyone who requires it (by Occupational Health & Safety standards), which is mandatory year-round.

Application

According to a GAF Technical Advisory Bulletin, there is no upper or lower temperature limit governing when asphalt shingles may be applied, if appropriate precautions are taken.

It may seem like Calgary & Southern Alberta are in a deep freeze all winter long but according to www.currentresults.com, the temperatures in the chart below might surprise you.  The sunny winter days and chinook conditions work in our favour for installation and a mild, sunny day is all it takes to seal the shingle adhesive.

Calgary Temps by Month

Winter application precautions include:

  • Use extra care when handling shingles to ensure they do not crack
  • Adjust nail guns accordingly (this is normal practice in the summer as well)
  • Hand-seal shingles when needed (this is not required often due to the number of sunny days we experience)

We will not perform work in temperatures that will put the material at risk or compromise the safety of our crews.

Inspection

We inspect every roof we replace to ensure it meets our high standards and double check that no roofing material was left behind.  If a snow filled yard prevents us from completing a thorough ground check, we will schedule a day to return in the spring to ensure no debris was unaccounted for.

Winter roof replacements are a great option for homeowners in Calgary & surrounding areas.  Our crews often prefer a cooler day to a hotter one; which comes with its own set of application precautions.

Contact us today for a free estimate and to learn more about our lifetime workmanship warranty, an option available to our customers no matter the temperature.

The roofing material you choose for your roof replacement not only affects the cost of the project; it can make a big difference in how your home looks after. While most people rush for conventional roofing materials such as asphalt shingles, it is essential to consider the cost, installation, and durability. You should also consider how the material is affected by the weather before you settle on which one to choose. Continue reading “3 Materials Compared When You Need A New Roof”

Euroshield Rubber Roofing System was created almost 2 decades ago to recycle used tires that would otherwise end up in a landfill. After years of research and development, this unique formula, which has 95% recycled materials, became a synthetic roofing product. Every home with a Euroshield rubber roof has between 250 to 1,000 tires used in its production.

You might think that a rubber roof would look better on the bottom of a car as a tire, but these roofs are highly attractive. There are a number of styles and you can’t always tell they are much different from other roofing systems. Here are a few examples:

Euroshield has 3  shake profiles available – EuroShake, Beaumont Shake and Harvest Shake.

Hubbard Roofing and Exteriors recently replaced a shake roof in SE Calgary with the Beaumont Shake in Silverwood. The results is a beautifully updated roof with a similar look to the original cedar shake roof, but in a new, refreshing color.  The rubber roof will not fade or crack like the original shake product, providing the homeowner with maintenance free protection for their home.

The Beaumont shake is the newest addition to the Euroshield family and was introduced in 2016.  It is the most authentic looking shake option with less panels than the Harvest Shake which is great for a larger roof.
