Hubbard Roofing and Exteriors has served Calgarians for almost 35 years. Started as a roofing company, Hubbard soon added siding to their slate of services and has now installed siding in Calgary for 25 years.

Bjorn Delblanc, a former renovation expert for James Hardie Building Products and of Blue Jay Renos in Edmonton, was able to see the company’s legacy first hand when he worked for James Hardie in Alberta.

“Because they’ve been in business for so long, they’ve got addresses for all their previous customers in Calgary,” says Bjorn. “You can see their work from years ago, and it’s a powerful thing to go check out that past work.”

When Bjorn first approached Hubbard to increase their comfort, installing James Hardie siding products, he encountered a company keen to learn and grow.

“Hubbard was very open to change and was open to trying new stuff,” says Bjorn. “They were very receptive and good listeners.”

This enthusiasm to improve was evident to Bjorn as he coached Hubbard’s exterior experts and Hardie Board installers.

“They listened, and they learned really quickly, and they sought my feedback. They didn’t just wait for my feedback. They were actively making sure that they were getting better as they were doing it,” says Bjorn.

As a result, the quality of their James Hardie siding projects improved significantly. So much so that they achieved a status claimed by only one other Calgary siding contractor.

“Every time I went to their houses, they got better and better,” says Bjorn. “It’s culminated in them achieving Elite Preferred contractor status for James Hardie.”

“That’s the top-level that a renovation contractor could achieve on the James Hardie Contractor Alliance program, and there’s only seven or eight in Canada,” says Bjorn.

Elite Preferred status is not easy to secure or maintain. To be eligible, a contractor must maintain a certain level of work.

“You have to do 18 jobs a year,” says Bjorn. “An Elite Preferred Contractor with Hardie also has to maintain a high standard of customer service.”

According to Bjorn, “Hardie uses a company called Guild Quality to do third-party customer surveys for every project you enter in their system.” This means that these customer ratings are much more trustworthy than the average review you find online.

These two requirements – volume and quality of work – make Elite Preferred status so challenging to achieve.

“You can’t make Elite Preferred if you’re not doing lots of work with Hardie, which is important for the experience aspect, and also making your customers happy throughout the process.”

This status shows that even after nearly 35 years in business, Hubbard continues to set high standards for exterior renovations in Calgary.

Deep Ocean was a popular color in 2019 and we anticipate it is here to stay for 2020 as well.  This stunning blue siding pairs nicely with arctic white trims which really pop against the darker base.  Below are a couple of color combinations featured on the James Hardie website if you are looking for inspiration for your upcoming home exterior refresh.

A classic, clean exterior will always stand the test of time and an Arctic White home brings us the same joy as seeing a fresh snowfall on the Rocky Mountains.  For a modern take on a white home, consider vertical siding or adding elements of Hardie Shingle.  Wood accents such a garage door, front door, and/or soffits will add the farmhouse feel that exploded in popularity thanks to Joanna Gaines.

This deep, bold shade provides an elegant yet dramatic look to a homes exterior.  This is another color that looks great paired with an Arctic White trim for a timeless finish.  Add black or wood accents to complete the look and get ready for a fresh new feel.

Popular with farmhouse style and modern homes, we love the clean lines that vertical siding creates.  Vertical siding can be mixed with Hardie Plank (horizontal siding), Hardie Shingle, or will command attention on its own.

We are so excited to reveal this exterior home makeover in the community of Woodbine (Calgary, AB).

The homeowners were amazing to work with and we love the vision they had for their home.  The bulk of this reno took about 6 weeks with a custom door adding an additional 2 weeks on to the project.

Roof Line

The project started with the addition of gables which changed the roofline and modernized the home.

A gable is the triangular part of a house’s exterior wall that supports a pointed or peaked roof.

Houses and buildings with pitched roofs have front-facing or side-facing gables — or often, both.  The shape and structure of these pointed gables help support a house’s roof and give the building a architectural style

Roof Replacement

The original grey 3-tab shingles were replaced with IKO Cambridge Architectural Shingles in dual black.  These shingles have deep shadow bands which give the roof a multi-dimensional appearance.  All of our asphalt shingles are “storm nailed” which means we use 6 nails instead of 4 for better performance in high winds.

James Hardie fiber cement siding was used to replace the original vinyl siding.  The color of the 8.25” HardiePlank is Timber Bark which beautifully highlights the soft texture of the siding that is designed to mimic wood.  The siding is engineered with long-lasting ColorPlus Technology and comes with a 30-Year Limited Warranty.

All the trims are HardieTrim Boards 5/4 Roughsawn.  The trim has a genuine wood grain texture to add distinction to the home with unmatched performance.  The color of the trim is Monterey Taupe which is a beautiful accent color for the Timber Bark siding.

Soffit & Fascia

The updated fascia is Gentek’s 8” ribbed aluminum in Canyon Clay.  Soffits include both vented and non vented 4-panel in Canyon Clay to match the fascia.

Gentek Soffit & Fascia

Soffit Facts from Gentek – “Properly installed soffit provides essential ventilation and air circulation to reduce excess moisture that can cause rotting and decay of the roof’s structure. It promotes directional air movement through the eaves and rafters of your home, helping it to stay in great shape both inside and out.”

New 5” aluminum seamless gutters were installed in Canyon Clay to match the soffit and fascia.  The homeowners also requested an Alu-Rex Premium Gutter Clean System which is a rain gutter leaf guard that is attached to the top of the gutter to catch leaves and other debris while still allowing water to pass through.

Stone Accents

The stone is called Banff Springs and beautifully compliments the dark wood tones of the front door and garage.  We always encourage homeowners to visit local stone suppliers in person to see the true color and texture of the stone they are interested in.

The windows are part of Gentek’s Regency line which combine classic beauty, enduring strength and easy upkeep with maximum energy savings.  Gentek has several glass packages available and the homeowners chose a high performance, triple glazed, EnergyPlus 3DK window with an ER Rating of 38.  This is the highest ER rating available which maximizes the benefits of natural or radiant heat known as “Solar Heat Gain”.
